Fix 'No AirPrint Printers Found' on iPhone & iPad: Complete Guide
Troubleshooting 'No AirPrint Printers Found' error on iOS. Learn how to fix Wi-Fi multicast isolation, Bonjour mDNS discovery, and make any printer AirPrint compatible from Windows.
You open a photo, PDF, or boarding pass on your iPhone or iPad, tap Share → Print, and wait for your printer to appear. Instead, you’re greeted with the frustrating message:
No AirPrint Printers Found
Whether you’re trying to print to a supposedly wireless printer or trying to share a USB printer from your computer, this error is one of the most common issues in home and office networking.
In this guide, we’ll walk through the 5-step diagnostic process to fix AirPrint discovery, explain why Wi-Fi routers block print signals, and show how to make any printer AirPrint compatible using Windows.
How AirPrint Discovery Actually Works
Before troubleshooting, it helps to understand what your iPhone is doing when you open the print screen:
- Multicast Broadcast: Your iPhone sends a multicast DNS (mDNS) query packet over UDP port 5353 to the local network IP
224.0.0.251. - Service Discovery: It asks: “Is there any device offering the
_ipp._tcpor_universal._sub._ipp._tcpprinting service on this network?” - Printer Response: An AirPrint-enabled printer (or an AirPrint bridge server) responds with its IP address, port (usually 631), and printer capabilities (color, duplex, paper sizes).
If anything interrupts this multicast exchange, your iPhone gives up and reports No AirPrint Printers Found.
Step 1: Check Network Subnets & Wi-Fi Bands
The most frequent culprit is network segmentation:
- 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz Bands: Many modern dual-band mesh routers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks into isolated segments. If your printer or host PC is on 2.4 GHz and your iPhone is on 5 GHz, they must be able to communicate across bands.
- Guest Wi-Fi Isolation: If your phone is connected to a “Guest Network”, routers strictly isolate devices from discovering other devices on the LAN. Make sure your phone is on the primary Wi-Fi network.
- VPN Enabled on iPhone: If you have a commercial VPN app active on your iPhone (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, WireGuard), your local network routing might be bypassed. Temporarily disconnect your VPN and check if the printer appears.
Step 2: Disable AP Isolation on Your Router
Many home routers (TP-Link, Netgear, Asus, Eero) have a feature called AP Isolation (or Access Point Isolation / Client Isolation / Station Isolation).
When AP Isolation is turned ON, wireless devices connected to Wi-Fi are blocked from talking directly to each other. This prevents your iPhone from seeing any local printer.
To fix this:
- Open your router’s admin dashboard (usually
192.168.1.1or192.168.0.1). - Navigate to Wireless Settings → Advanced Wireless.
- Look for AP Isolation or Client Isolation and set it to Disabled.
- Enable IGMP Snooping or Multicast Forwarding if available.
- Save settings and reboot your router.
Step 3: Check Windows Firewall Ports (When Sharing from PC)
If you are sharing a printer from a Windows computer, Windows Defender Firewall might be blocking incoming discovery packets.
AirPrint requires two ports:
- UDP Port 5353 (mDNS / Bonjour Discovery)
- TCP Port 631 (IPP Print Server)
To verify in PowerShell on Windows:
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Printman AirPrint IPP" -Direction Inbound -Protocol TCP -LocalPort 631 -Action Allow
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "Printman AirPrint mDNS" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 5353 -Action Allow
Step 4: What If Your Printer Doesn’t Support AirPrint?
Many of the most reliable monochrome laser printers—such as the HP LaserJet P1102, Canon LBP2900, or Brother HL-L2300D—are USB-only and do not have native Apple AirPrint chips.
Until recently, people solved this by buying expensive hardware print servers or setting up a Raspberry Pi with CUPS.
The modern solution: Run Printman on the Windows PC already connected to the printer.
How Printman Fixes “No AirPrint Printers Found”
Printman includes an embedded zero-dependency mDNS broadcast engine and an IPP Everywhere server. When you run:
.\printman.exe share
Printman:
- Detects your USB printer via the standard Windows driver.
- Broadcasts genuine Apple-compliant Bonjour records (
_ipp._tcp,_universal._sub._ipp._tcp). - Advertises capabilities including Apple URF and PDF raster formats.
- Immediately makes the printer visible in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
[INFO] Broadcasting Bonjour mDNS on 224.0.0.251:5353...
[INFO] Printer "HP LaserJet P1102" advertised as AirPrint target.
[INFO] Ready for iOS / iPadOS Print Dialog.
Your iPhone will immediately see the printer with no third-party mobile apps required.
Step 5: Test via Phone Browser (printman serve)
If your Wi-Fi environment has an aggressive multicast policy that cannot be modified (such as in dormitories, corporate Wi-Fi, or hotel rooms), Bonjour discovery may remain blocked by network administrators.
In this scenario, Printman provides a built-in mobile web UI fallback:
.\printman.exe serve
- Printman starts a local web server on port 5000.
- On your iPhone, open Safari and navigate to
http://<your-pc-ip>:5000. - You can immediately drag and drop or upload any PDF, image, or document to print.
Summary Troubleshooting Matrix
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Phone on Guest Wi-Fi | Client Isolation blocks LAN discovery | Connect to primary Wi-Fi |
| iPhone VPN Active | VPN tunnels traffic away from LAN | Disconnect VPN before printing |
| Router blocking mDNS | Multicast disabled in router firmware | Enable IGMP Snooping in router |
| Non-AirPrint USB Printer | Printer hardware lacks AirPrint chip | Run printman.exe share on Windows PC |
| Aggressive Corporate Wi-Fi | Router drops UDP 5353 entirely | Use printman.exe serve via browser |
