How to Turn an Old USB Printer into a Wireless Phone Printer
Step-by-step tutorial on converting any legacy USB printer connected to a Windows PC into an instant wireless LAN printer for iOS, Android, and tablets.
If you own an older printer—like a workhorse HP LaserJet Professional P1102, an older Canon, Epson, or Brother USB monochrome laser—you know the feeling: the hardware is virtually indestructible, the toner lasts years, and it never jams.
Yet in modern households, laptops, iPhones, Android phones, and iPads rule the day. School homework, boarding passes, medical forms, and Amazon return labels arrive on mobile devices.
Until now, your choices were frustrating:
- Email or AirDrop the document to your desktop PC, log in, open the file, and press Print.
- Throw away a perfectly functional printer and spend $200+ on a modern Wi-Fi printer that nags you for subscription ink cartridges.
Printman solves this problem by turning your Windows desktop or laptop into a lightweight, zero-dependency local print server in seconds.
What You Need
Before starting, make sure you have:
- A PC running Windows 10 (build 19041+) or Windows 11.
- Your USB printer plugged into the Windows PC and recognized in Windows Settings (Printers & Scanners).
- Both your PC and your phone connected to the same home Wi-Fi network.
- The Printman executable.
Step 1: Download Printman
Printman requires zero third-party drivers, no Node.js, and no cloud subscriptions.
- Head to the Printman GitHub Releases.
- Download the Standalone ZIP (
printman-win-x64-standalone.zip). - Extract the archive into a folder of your choice (e.g.
C:\Tools\Printman).
Tip: The Standalone version is self-contained and does not require installing the .NET runtime.
Step 2: Start the Mobile Print Server
Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal in your Printman folder and run:
./printman.exe serve --no-auth
If you prefer PIN protection to keep houseguests or roommates from printing without permission, simply run:
./printman.exe serve
Printman will generate a secure 6-digit PIN and display mobile access links directly in your terminal:
[WEB SERVER RUNNING] Port: 5000
[SECURITY] PIN Protected: 849201
Access from this machine or your phone on the same Wi-Fi:
Local: http://localhost:5000/?pin=849201
Network: http://192.168.1.50:5000/?pin=849201
Step 3: Open the Web UI on Your Phone
- On your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone, open Safari or Chrome.
- Type or scan the Network URL shown in your terminal (e.g.
http://192.168.1.50:5000/?pin=849201). - Bookmark this page or add it to your home screen!
You are greeted by Printman’s clean, mobile-first interface. It automatically detects your system’s light or dark mode theme and connects directly to your Windows print spooler.
Step 4: Pick a Document and Print
From your mobile browser:
- Tap Select Documents (or drag & drop on desktop).
- Choose any PDF document, image (
.jpg,.png,.bmp), or text file (.txt,.csv,.md). - Select your target printer from the dropdown. Printman automatically retrieves the printer’s supported paper sizes (A4, Letter, Legal, etc.) and hardware status flags.
- Customize page ranges, copies, orientation, duplexing, and color mode.
- Tap Print.
Printman feeds the job into its serialized spooling pipeline. You can watch the live job progress directly from your phone’s screen in the Live Spooler Queue tab.
Pro Tip: Run Printman Automatically on Windows Startup
To keep your printer wireless 24/7 without opening a terminal every day:
- Press
Win + R, typeshell:startup, and press Enter. - Right-click inside the folder and select New > Shortcut.
- Set the target to:
"C:\Tools\Printman\printman.exe" serve --no-auth - Click Next, name it
Printman Server, and click Finish.
Now, whenever your Windows PC boots, Printman is ready in the background to serve print jobs from your entire household.
Real-Time Diagnostics & Spooler Purge
Unlike generic printing utilities, Printman directly queries the native Windows Spooler (winspool.drv):
- Hardware Alerts: Instantly flags
Paper Jam,Out of Paper,Offline, orDoor Open. - Duplicate Protection: Warns you before submitting a duplicate file if an identical job is already queued.
- Emergency Purge: If a job ever gets stuck in Windows Spooler, tap Purge All Jobs to immediately flush the queue.
